Tooth erosion occurs when tooth structure starts to deteriorate from frequent exposure to acids over a long period of time. The source of these acids can be from within the body (e.g. acid reflux and vomiting) or from food and drink (e.g. excess fruits/citrus, lemon water, wine, soft drinks – those with and without sugar, etc).
If left to sit on the teeth, the acids will eat away at the minerals from inside the tooth structure, causing them to weaken and become susceptible to several issues such as sensitivity to hot and cold, easily fractured causing sharp edges which could irritate the tongue, it could also affect the overall appearance – as the outer layer of the tooth is worn away the teeth will appear darker.
Tooth erosion is a common dental issue that can affect anyone of any age but with help from your Dentist, it can be managed to best prevent further damage. Some helpful tips to look after your teeth after they have been in contact with acids are:
– Drinking water or milk after being in contact with acids to help neutralise them.
– Waiting at least an hour before brushing your teeth after consuming any acidic food and drink or vomiting.
– Chewing sugar-free gum to help stimulate saliva, which will assist in washing the acids off the teeth.
– Avoid constant sipping on acidic drinks throughout the day as this will cause repeated acid attacks on the teeth – this includes water with slices of fruit in it.
