Sugar is one of the leading causes of tooth decay.
It is most often thought of as the white granules you add to your coffee, but it comes in many forms & is known by many names. This can make finding the healthiest option very difficult as many foods and drinks advertise as no added sugar, but can still contain excessive amounts of natural sugars.
Here are just some of the different forms and names:
Natural Sugar – Occurs naturally within the structure
Added Sugar – Added during manufacturing or if you were to add it before eating or drinking
Free Sugar – Includes added sugars and natural sugars
Hidden Sugars – Different names such as sucrose, molasses, glucose, rice malt, fructose, etc
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a daily intake of 6 or less teaspoons of sugar for an adult which is less than what you would find in a can of soft drink!
