When Should I Seek Emergency Dental Care?

Most people have only had to think about their routine dental check-ups with little thought given to what they would do in a dental emergency. Unfortunately, there may be times when you or your family need emergency dental care. So, it pays to know what constitutes a dental emergency and what to do if you find yourself experiencing one.

Below are some common dental emergencies that need the urgent attention of an emergency dentist:

  • Severe or persistent toothache
  • Severe or persistent swelling of the gums
  • Sporting or other trauma to your mouth or teeth
  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • Severe wisdom pain discomfort
  • Oral infection or abscess
  • A broken or lost filling or crown
  • Damaged dentures

If you’re experiencing any one of the above things or another dental emergency, contact us as soon as possible. We can book you for urgent dental attention and give you advice on how to manage your emergency in the best way possible prior to your appointment.

If you’re unsure if what you’re experiencing is a dental emergency or not, rather be safe than sorry. Call us for the expert advice you can rely on.

Immediate First Aid For a Knocked-Out Tooth

First aid for a knocked-out tooth is relatively simple and straightforward. The good news is that the majority of the time, a knocked-out tooth can be saved if it is not damaged. It is important to follow the first aid tips and not damage the tooth. Most importantly, remain calm and act quickly.

Do not try to reinsert a primary (baby) tooth. If a secondary (adult) tooth is knocked-out, do the following immediately:

1. Clean the tooth without damaging it.

Only hold your tooth by its crown (the crown is the smooth white part of the tooth normally visible in your mouth). You do not want to damage the roots. Do not scrape or rub dirt off your tooth. Do not rinse it under running water. Rinse the entire tooth in saliva, milk or contact lens solution.

2. Place the tooth back in the mouth.

Immediately place your tooth back in its socket, ensuring that it is facing the right way around. It is very important that the tooth be replaced within 5-10 minutes of being knocked-out. Bite down gently on some gauze or a soft cloth (such as a handkerchief or face washer), to keep your tooth in place.

3. Seek emergency dental treatment immediately

Time is critical in preventing permanent damage. Call us straight away for an emergency dental appointment on (02) 6571 5533.

Immediate First Aid For a Damaged Tooth or Filling

If you have chipped or cracked your tooth or it’s crown, or lost a filling, you should see your dentist promptly, if not urgently. Not fixing a broken tooth or replacing a lost filling will promote decay and possible tooth loss.
